In the town of Tyrnavos, in the PGI Tyrnavos area, located in the region of Thessaly in Central Greece, Domaine Zafeirakis has been practicing viticulture for more than a century. Christos Zafeirakis, a fourth-generation winemaker, studied enology at the University of Athens, continuing his studies in Italy while he worked for several years in different Italian regions, such as Piedmont, Alto Adige, and Tuscany. In 2005, upon returning to Greece, and following his family’s tradition of wine production, he planted his first organic vineyard.
Christos is considered one of the young pioneering Greek winemakers and is widely credited with reviving the indigenous variety Limniona, creating world-class wines while simultaneously maintaining his distinct style. The Limniona for the “Young Vineyards” bottling is made from vines that are 10 to 15 years in age, grown on sandy-clay soils with flint. The wine is fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured in large barrels (3,000 and 5,000 liters in size).
The 2021 Limniona offers aromas of dried dark cherry, blackberry, rose petal, with notes of brown spices, earth, leather, and smoke. On the palate, it’s savory and intense, bursting with dark berries and refreshing acidity. A great BBQ wine.
