Woodlands "Margaret" Red '17
Born from a love of Bordeaux Cabernet blends, and the dream to create a stellar red wine of their own, David and Heather Watson established Woodlands in 1973 within the Wilyabrup Valley, south of the city of Perth in Western Australia.
Woodlands Vineyard now covers 10 hectares, and is certified organic. The Woodlands Brook Vineyard was established in 1999, and covers 17 hectares. In the winery, all Woodlands wines are sorted berry by berry, and spend up to two years in the finest French oak before being carefully blended by the Watson family.
“Margaret” is one of the winery’s top wine, sourced entirely from the Woodlands Vineyard. The Cabernet Sauvignon portion (80%) comes from a slope on the south of Woodlands that wraps around a 90-degree radius from east to north. The fruit on this slope receives a great deal of direct sunlight from morning to mid-afternoon, leading to rich full-bodied wines. The Merlot and Malbec plots that make up the remainder of “Margaret” come from Woodlands’ west-facing slope of deep loam soil. This slope receives the most direct afternoon sunlight at Woodlands, and produces more spicy exotic fruit characters in the finished wine.
The 2017 vintage was a classic in the Margaret River region. A deep, midnight black color with rings of garnet. Intense notes of dark fruits (notably blackberry, cassis, and black cherry) burst from the glass and are set against a backdrop of a driven and vibrant palate, full of black pepper, star anise, and graphite. The finish is ripe with energy.
This is a terrific wine which you can decant and drink now, it will also age nicely over the next decade.
