In Weinviertel, a northern subregion of Niederösterreich (Austria’s largest winemaking region), the Groiss family has cultivated grapes for centuries. This area, known for its diverse terroirs and loess soils, produces excellent white wines from indigenous grape varieties. Weingut Ingrid Groiss is a small family business, with Ingrid at the helm, her father helping with tractor work, and her mother assisting in the vineyards. The family oversees 20 hectares (49.4 acres) of organic vineyards from which it makes a focused range of wines, Ingrid Groiss studied winemaking at Universität für Bodenkultur and returned home to eventually inherit vineyards from both her mother’s and father’s sides of the family. Upon taking over the family vineyards, Ingrid converted them to organics, with the goal of producing wines that more clearly reflect their terroir, grape variety, and vintage.
This rosé, a blend of Pinot Noir and a small amount of Zweigelt, is made from fruit grown in the Hasenhaide (“garden of the hares”) vineyard. The grapes are destemmed and gently pressed, with an eight-hour maceration on the skins. The wine is aged on the lees in stainless steel.
The nose shows notes of fresh strawberries, red cherries, and citrus peel, along with delicate floral and light herbal notes. The fruit on the palate is juicy and well balanced by a bright, mouth-watering acidity. A light, vibrant, fresh rosé, and easily a favorite of the year!
