Villa Diamante Fiano di Avellino "Vigna della Congregazione" '20
This is the wine that earned Villa Diamante respect from everyone in the wine business in Campania. It is one of Italy’s great white wines.
The name Vigna della Congregazione comes this vineyard’s historic ownership, as it once belonged to the church. And it’s well known that the church knew all the very best vineyards!
The vines in Vigna della Congregazione are between 15 and 35 years old, north facing, and planted in clay and calcareous marl. The vineyard is 2 ha in size, at 430 meters above sea level.
The grapes are typically harvested late into October. Like the “Clos d’Haut,” the grapes are gently pressed, and fermentation happens with a pied de cuve of natural yeasts in stainless steel tanks. The wine ages on its lees for just under a year and rests another eight months in bottle before release.
The 2020 is gorgeous. Citrus and stone fruit intertwine, with hints of almond extract, white flowers, and honey. It seamlessly glides across the palate, playing off notes of stone fruit, mineral, and citrus oil, and showing a long, lingering finish.
