Tenuta Buon Tempo Rosso di Montalcino '24

Tenuta Buon Tempo is located near Castelnuovo dell’Abate, in the far southern reaches of Montalcino. The estate sits on a hill overlooking the Orcia River and facing Monte Amiata, with vineyards ranging from 180 to 350 meters above sea level. This is one of the warmer parts of Montalcino, but the elevation, rocky soils, and constant movement of air help preserve acidity and freshness in the wines.

The property was originally known as Podere Oliveto, with the first vineyard planted in 1994. Per Landin and Janet Lansill acquired the estate in 2012, renamed it Tenuta Buon Tempo, and began an ambitious program of improving the vineyards and cellar. Today, the estate farms 14 hectares of vines, planted entirely to Sangiovese Grosso, and has been certified organic since 2021. The vineyards are divided between 12 hectares surrounding the estate in Castelnuovo dell’Abate and another two hectares north of Montalcino, near Montosoli.

The 2024 Rosso di Montalcino comes from nine hectares of vines planted between 2000 and 2001 at an average elevation of 200 meters. The vineyards face southeast and southwest, with Sangiovese planted on rocky, calcareous clay soils from the Sillano geological formation. The grapes are harvested by hand and fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks. The wine is then aged for 10 to 11 months in unlined concrete and well used oak before being naturally clarified through slow settling in stainless steel. Just over 23,000 bottles were produced.

The 2024 shows aromas of bright cherry and raspberry, joined by Mediterranean herbs, flowers, and light spice. The palate is fresh and juicy, with fine tannins and a long, precise mineral finish. This is Rosso di Montalcino exactly as it should be, serious enough to capture the character of the territory but open and inviting enough to drink now. Try it with pappardelle and wild boar ragù.
