Burgundy
Domaine Simon Bize & Fils, founded in 1880 in Savigny-lès-Beaune, has grown over generations into one of the village’s benchmark estates, with notable premier cru holdings such as Aux Vergelesses, Les Fournaux and Les Marconnets, along with rarer parcels in Latricières-Chambertin and Corton-Charlemagne. A major modern turning point came under Patrick Bize in the 1970s, when he modernized the cuverie, expanded the cellar and refined the domaine’s quietly meticulous, low-oak, terroir-driven style. Following Patrick’s passing in 2013, his wife Chisa Bize has carried the torch, deepening the estate’s commitment to thoughtful, often biodynamically influenced viticulture and maintaining its reputation for producing elegant, transparent, age-worthy wines that capture the soul of Savigny-lès-Beaune.
In our view, the best red of the domaine, this cuvée hails from a coveted 2.20-hectare parcel planted in three phases (1939, 1949, 1954) on a gently rising slope facing east-by-south above Pernand‑Vergelesses. At the base lies sandy marl; higher up, iron-rich oolite imparts both structure and minerality. This will increase in complexity with some bottle age.
