Schmitt "Frei Körper Kultur" Rot '19 (1L)

    Rheinhessen

Schmitt "Frei Körper Kultur" Rot '19 (1L)

Add this to the list of happy accidents.

Earlier this month when I was traveling in France, I attended several tastings in and around the town of Angers, in the Loire Valley. One such tasting at Greniers Saint-Jean featured well over a hundred producers from France and around the world. Being in the heart of the Loire Valley, I was certainly focused on tasting French producers, but one of my most memorable tastings was with Bianka and Daniel Schmitt.

This dynamic couple own 16 hectares of vineyards in the Rheinhessen region of Germany. Fourth-generation producers, they took over the family vineyards in 2012. They are one of only 80 producers in Germany to be certified as biodynamic by Demeter. They produce a huge range of wines, each with its own story to tell.

There are very few wineries where I taste and thoroughly enjoy each and every cuvée. Such was the case with Bianka and Daniel's wines. These weren't stylized wines, rather sincere and honest wines that ultimately are fun, delicious, and easy to drink.

“Frei Körper Kultur Rot” is the type of red wine that speaks to a wide range of moments as a wine drinker. A blend of Sankt Laurent, Merlot, Portugieser, Blaufränkisch, and Spätburgunder, fermented in neutral oak with natural yeasts. It is packaged in a one-liter bottle, with a bright and fun label, and I couldn't dream of a wine more suited to our wine club. It is a true everyday drinker, showcasing pretty red fruits, wild spices, soft tannins, and good overall balance. A great value.
