South Australia
Willunga 100’s first vintage was 2005, and the estate has remained firmly focused on varietal bottlings of old-vine Grenache from McLaren Vale rather than blends. The producer’s name is a reference to the historic Hundred of Willunga, established in 1839, three years after the settlement of South Australia. At the time, 100 households were required to occupy an area for it to receive a place on the map, a designation known as a “Hundred.” Today, the Hundred of Willunga remains the source of much of the estate’s fruit.
Willunga 100 is based in Blewitt Springs, a subregion of McLaren Vale known for its Mediterranean climate, cooler average temperatures, and moderating afternoon sea breezes. These conditions allow Grenache to ripen slowly and evenly, preserving freshness while developing complexity.
The 2021 Grenache “Smart Vineyard” comes from a remarkable site planted in 1923 to dry-grown Grenache bush vines. The vineyard sits at 220 meters above sea level on the moderate to steep hills of the Clarendon Onkaparinga Gorge, rooted in ancient loam over red-brown clay and bedrock. The vines were planted by Bernard Smart’s father and are still tended today by 90-year-old vigneron Bernard Smart alongside his son, Wayne. This vineyard holds deep significance in McLaren Vale, with many Grenache vines planted across the region since 1923 propagated from Smart Vineyard cuttings, including some of Willunga 100’s own newer plantings.
On the nose, red cherry, blackberry, and a gentle lift of spice. The palate is supple and finely textured, with bright fruit framed by soft tannins and a savory, earthy undertone. This is a natural partner for grilled lamb, herb-roasted chicken, or vegetables cooked over live fire.
This is a very special price on this wine, as they are no longer working with their distributor. It is normally a $50 retail bottle. So take advantage of this great deal while supplies last!
