Douro
Pormenor Vinhos is the project of the winemaker Pedro Coelho, who was raised in the Douro region and had previously worked in a finance role for a port house. Pormenor, which means “details,” began with the 2013 vintage, and Pedro’s goal was, and continues to be, to make wines characterized by freshness, restrained alcohol, and elegance. To accomplish this, he seeks out old-vine vineyards. He owns about 3.5 hectares of vines and works with a total of about 25 hectares, ranging in age from 45 years to more than 100 years, primarily in Douro Superior. The vineyards are high in elevation, which helps counter the natural heat of the valley. He works only with indigenous varieties, and the wines are fermented with native, wild yeasts. His winery consists of a few stainless steel tanks and old large barrels.
The rosé is a blend of several indigenous varieties, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, and Tinta Barroca. The grapes were pressed gently, then fermented and aged in stainless steel. On the nose, the wine shows notes of strawberry, pomegranate, and hibiscus, along with an herbal, earthy note of rosehip. The wine is tart and tangy on the palate, with a light, cranberry-like finish.
This savory and delicious rosé is the perfect transitional wine from summer to fall.
