Northern Rhône
Nicholas Badel’s wines transmit a sense of transparency. From a family of farmers in the Northern Rhône, he makes wine from vineyards on a forested plateau near a tributary of the Rhône River, in Vernosc-lès-Annonay. His farming practices have been certified organic since he began making wine, and he has been described as a perfectionist. The wines reflect his devotion to winemaking and his sense of purpose, and they are a joy to taste.
Among all of Badel’s wines, “Petite Roche” is considered to be the one that’s ready to drink soonest, and it’s a great introduction to his style as well as his skill with the Syrah variety. Made from young vines grown on granite soils in the 350-meter Rochegrand vineyard, “Petite Roche” is aged in cement, which helps preserve the character of the Syrah he uses. The wine is unmistakably Syrah—peppercorn, red and dark berries, savory green herbs, tapenade. Enjoy it with roasted meats such as lamb or a simple rotisserie chicken. The 2020 vintage was another great year in the Northern Rhône, and “Petite Roche” overdelivers in every way. Rhône Syrah lovers should not miss this opportunity to taste Badel’s wines.
