Walker Bay
Maanschijn (from the Dutch term for moonlight) is a collaboration between two winemakers, Douglas Mylrea and Paul Hoogwerf, who work with vineyards in the southern, cooler Walker Bay wine district. They had both studied winemaking in Stellenbosch, then separately gained experience in cellars and vineyards around the world until their paths crossed again. They cofounded their wine company, Maanschijn, which is located below a tall mountain peak, the Maanschynkop.
This Brunch Club Methode Ancestrale 2024 sparkling wine is composed of Sauvignon blanc. The vineyard was harvested earlier in the season, in order to best capture the bright and youthful flavors characteristic of a true brunch wine.
The fruit, in whole bunches, was pressed gently and allowed to settle overnight. Fermentation occurred spontaneously and proceeded at a low temperature for eight weeks before bottling. After five months on lees, the sparkling wine was disgorged.
This fun everyday sparkling has complex notes of passion fruit, gooseberry, and herbs on the nose. The palate is medium weight, with ripe grapefruit notes, zesty herbs and good freshness on the finish. Chill this bubbly down for your next Sunday brunch!
