Umbria
The Lungarotti family has been producing wine and olive oil in the mid-Tiber River valley since the 18th century. But it wasn’t until after the Second World War that the family estate underwent pivotal changes, drawing attention to Umbria and helping establish appellations for the region’s wines. Today, Lungarotti cultivates 250 hectares of vineyards, with a focus on sustainability, between the Torgiano estate (230 hectares, VIVA certification since 2018) and an estate in Montefalco (20 hectares, organic since 2010). Native varieties such as Sangiovese, Colorino, Sagrantino, Grechetto, Trebbiano Spoletino, and Vermentino are planted alongside international varieties. The name “L’Um” comes from the first letters of “L’Umbria,” emphasizing the winery’s bond with the land.
This medium-bodied red is made of equal parts Merlot and Sangiovese. The wine was fermented in stainless steel, with daily pumping over and racking after 18 days. It was matured for 8–10 months in barrique. The wine shows aromas of black cherries and brandied fruit, with hints of coffee, cocoa, and sweet spices. Pair it with a range of dishes—stews, barbecued pork or lamb, pastrami, pizza, and medium-aged cheeses are all great options.
