Jacob Martin Syrah, Rogue Valley '20

Like father, like son. Sometimes old sayings still ring true.

Such is the case with second-generation winemaker Jacob Martin Kinne. He grew up around his dad's winery. McKinlay Estate, one of the old-school wineries in Oregon, founded in 1987. If you had to sum up Matt Kinne's winery in one sentence, the message would be simple. Burgundian-influenced wines that stay true to their elegant approach, all at great prices.

Also like his father's wines, his are relatively unknown and in some ways it seems intentional. There is very little info written about the Jacob Martin wines, but who cares when the wines are so good!

We were particularly impressed with this outstanding Oregon Syrah from the Carpenter Hill Vineyard, located in the Rogue Valley, just west of the town of Talent. The 20-year-old vines are planted on an east-facing aspect, in shallow alluvial soils. The grape skins are often quite thick here, given the extremely low yields because of the lack of water in southern Oregon.

The grapes were 100% destemmed, and the wine was fermented with native yeast in small fermenters. It was aged for ten months in used barrels and bottled without filtration. All of this allows for current enjoyment or cellaring for 5–8 years.

The aromatics on this wine are gorgeous, a mixture of blue and black fruit, flowers, and earth. The wine is super silky, with soft tannins, beautiful acidity, and great balance. This should be a staple for all your summer BBQs.

Jacob produced just 100 cases of this terrific wine!
