Il Marroneto is a small, eight-hectare estate on the north side of Montalcino, just outside of the town. It was founded in 1974 by Giuseppe Mori who fell in love with the estate when he first visited from nearby Siena. Rooted in traditional techniques and philosophy the estate uses large oak casks for fermentation, and has passed the estate down inter-generationally, from Giuseppe to his son, Alessandro, and in turn, to Alessandro’s son, Iacopo, who has recently begun working closely with his father in the running of the estate.
Located in the northern zone of Montalcino which is characterized by high elevation, steep slopes, and cool temperatures. These conditions are idea for creating Brunellos of significant ageing potential, showing complexity, increased aromatics, classic tannic structure and nervy acidity. Il Maronneto Brunello, ferments and ages first in large casks for about 3 years followed by about 10 months in the bottle.
The wine opens with a cascade of bright cherry, rose buds, lavender and cedary spice, a highly perfumed 2019 Brunello di Montalcino. This is surprisingly juicy yet quite complex, with hints of zesty orange and vibrant acidity that add tremendous energy with crisp clove-inflected red fruits. It finishes with solid tannins, which are sweet and round. The 2019 tapers off spicy and fresh, leaving mint, violets and sweet herbal tea notes.
