    Giovanni Almondo Roero Nebbiolo '21

The Roero wine-producing region lies across the Tanaro River from the celebrated red-wine appellations of Barolo and Barbaresco. At their estate (named after Domenico’s father Giovanni), Domenico Almondo and his sons Stefano and Federico make this bottling of Nebbiolo in a classic style, combining grapes from three different vineyards, all located at Montà d’Alba, where the family has been since the 1300s. The combination of traditional winemaking practices and careful farming practices are what make the Almondo wines great.

The vines are planted on sand of marine origin, limestone, silt, and clay. The soils here are sandier than those of the Langhe, yielding Nebbiolo in a style that shows more red fruit and generosity on the palate in its youth, making the wine ready to drink with less aging than would be expected of a Nebbiolo from the Langhe. The fruit for the Giovanni Almondo Roero Nebbiolo is harvested from three different sites and is fermented with indigenous yeasts, with about ten days of maceration, then aged for about 18 months in large Slavonian oak casks, or botti (25 hectoliters), for 18 months.

On the nose, the wine shows notes of wild berries, redcurrant, and dried cherry, with aromas of cedar, dried herbs, rose, and tobacco. With its freshness and drinkability, this a versatile red to have around for the temperate evenings ahead, alongside anything off the grill, from vegetables and salmon to chicken or red meat.
