    Fratelli Alessandria Verduno Pelaverga '24

The Alessandria family has been in Verduno, at the northern edge of the Barolo zone, since the mid-19th century. Now led by the fifth generation, brothers and winemakers Alessandro and Vittore Alessandria. Fratelli Alessandria is best known for its Barolo wines, made from Piedmont’s signature grape variety, Nebbiolo, while also producing excellent wines from the region’s other native varieties, including Pelaverga and Barbera d’Alba, often characterized as fruitier and more immediately approachable.

Verduno Pelaverga is the historic specialty of the commune, a rare and distinctive grape that thrives in Verduno’s lighter soils and cooler exposures. At Fratelli Alessandria, the fruit is gently fermented in stainless steel to preserve freshness and aromatic purity, followed by a brief élevage that emphasizes clarity over extraction. The 2024 Pelaverga captures the variety’s singular character: aromatic, finely textured, and unmistakably Piedmontese, balancing vibrant red fruit with savory, peppery nuance and lively acidity. Approachable in its youth, yet quietly structured, this is a wine that drinks beautifully now while offering the ability to age gracefully over the near- to mid-term. Verduno’s answer to Burgundy meets the Northern Rhône.
