Southern Rhône
The Soard brothers, Patrick and Vincent, own and operate this impeccable domaine, whose cellars are in the village of Beaumes-de-Venise, near Mont Ventoux and the Dentelles de Montmirail. They trace their lineage as vignerons back to their great-grandfather Casimir Soard, whose wines were winning medals as early as 1902. In 1988, Patrick and Vincent, with the encouragement of their mother, Nicole, decided to renew the fame of the estate and constructed cellars to vinify and bottle the full range of appellations available. The vineyards of the domaine are scattered over seven communes, including Beaumes-de-Venise and the surrounding villages. The Soard family has always farmed with great concern for the environment, and now all the wines produced at the domaine are certified organic.
The 2020 Ventoux Rouge is composed of 75% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and 5% Carignan, with an average vine age of 30 years. The Grenache, Syrah, and Carignan are sourced from three separate terroirs, and each parcel is harvested and vinified separately. Clusters are 100% destemmed, followed by a 16-day maceration with daily pump overs and punch downs. Fermentation occurs spontaneously with indigenous yeast in concrete tanks. The wine ages for 18 months in concrete vats. The final Ventoux Rouge blend is created before the bottling, which occurs prior to the next year’s harvest.
Classic Ventoux rouge! Bright, juicy, with wild strawberry, cracked pepper, and wild thyme notes on the nose and the palate. Rich enough to pair with meats, but balanced enough to drink on its own. Always a great value!
