Emilia Romagna
Alessandro Nicolucci is the fourth-generation winemaker at the family-run farm, located specifically in Predappio Alta. The family has been estate bottling since 1885, although the history of wine in this area dates back to around 1000 B.C. The history is on full display in the old historic cellar, at the base of the local castle.
Sangiovese is the main red grape produced in Predappio Alta, well suited to its calcareous clay soil, strewn with pebbles. The hillside vineyards, with their drainage and exposure yield rich but low-yielding grapes. Romagna Sangiovese is always noted for its power and structure, and that is on full display in the Nicolucci wines.
The top wines of Alessandro are both labeled "Vigna del Generale." The name comes from an old story of a general who came back to the village he was from after fighting in the war. He purchased a parcel of land that was inhabited by a wolf, whose passion for grapes were almost equal to that of the general. This story is illustrated through the label, with the wolf howling at the moon in the Vigna del Generale.
This very special bottling is essentially a wine that Alessandro dreamed of making. A berry by berry selection from 90+ year-old Sangiovese vines. It is "Vigna del Generale" on steroids.
It is difficult to put into words the quality of this wine. It is extremely dense, yet fresh, complex and powerful. Pure red fruit, flowers, crushed rocks, savory herbs, and powerful yet ripe tannins. It is a wine that you taste, and say "wow." As I mentioned in the introduction, it is one of the greatest Italian red wines I've ever had. Buyer beware though, it is a young wine that is really meant for long term aging. I would say it will drink the best between 2026 through 2056. Only 1200 bottles produced!
Each bottle is beautifully packaged in its own box, and would make a great present for clients or a loved one that enjoys the best of Italian wines.
