Evesham Wood was founded by Russ and Mary Rainey in 1986, on a lower terrace of the Eola-Amity Hills’s eastern slope in Oregon’s Willamette Valley. The east-facing, 13-acre estate vineyard is named Le Puits Sec, French for “the dry well,” as there is one in the vineyard.
After twenty-plus years, Russ and Mary began working closely with Erin Nuccio, who is the owner of Haden Fig. The founders saw not only an opportunity to retire early but also someone who would continue the Evesham Wood legacy and make wine according to the same philosophies. In August 2010, Erin and his wife, Jordan, became the owners of Evesham Wood Winery and Le Puits Sec Vineyard.
The “La Grive Bleu” cuvée, as it typically is sold only through the winery. The parcel for this cuvée comes from a block at Le Puits Sec that is planted to Dijon clones. The year 2022 was a challenging vintage from a quantity perspective, yet the wines are a return to the cooler-climate style that we love from Oregon.
The 2022 “La Grive Bleue” Pinot Noir has wonderful aromatics, with hints of cherry skin, violets, and blueberries. As always with Evesham, the texture and balance of this wine are fantastic, with a silky mouthfeel that firms up on the long finish. Don’t hesitate to pour this into a decanter for an hour before serving. A great wine for the table.
