Beaujolais
Growing up in a wine family, Elisa pursued agronomy for her studies in Dijon. After school she spent time working as a sourcer of quality agricultural products for several Parisian chefs. She returned to her family estate in 2018. Based in the village of Moulin-à-Vent, the family owns 4.2 hectares of vines in the appellation. They have also expanded a bit outside, acquiring a parcel in the village of Chiroubles, as well as producing an excellent value Beaujolais-Villages.
If there is a wine by which to know Guérin, it would be this fantastic bottling. “Les Thorins” is a single east-facing vineyard in the Moulin-à-Vent cru. The 60 year-old vines are planted in a soil locally called gorrha. This decomposed granite is a mix of quartz sand, clay and iron oxide.
Vinification is based on semi-carbonic maceration of whole clusters with native yeasts in concrete tanks of 54 hectoliters. She does daily pumpers during fermentation, lasting around 15 days. The wine is aged in a mixture of concrete and 228 liter barrels, with 80% in concrete for a year, and 20% in those oak barrels for 9 months. She produced just 6,200 bottles of this wine in 2022.
There is so much to love about this wine. The nose lends itself more on the savory side, with herb notes accompanying the dark fruit. On the palate, this wine simply glides, with some weight and texture, yet a harmonious and balanced approach to its fruit and earthy elements. A truly delicious Moulin-à-Vent that and fan of Gamay will love!
