Burgundy
Growing up in a wine family, Elisa pursued agronomy for her studies in Dijon. After school she spent time working as a sourcer of quality agricultural products for several Parisian chefs. She returned to her family estate in 2018. Based in the village of Moulin-à-Vent, the family owns 4.2 hectares of vines in the appellation. They have also expanded a bit farther, acquiring a parcel in the village of Chiroubles, and producing an excellent value Beaujolais-Villages, which is the bottle included in this month’s wine club.
The Beaujolais-Villages bottling is made from organic grapes grown in two cool-climate areas: Quincié-en-Beaujolais, which has blue schist and limestone soils on a northern exposure; and Lantignié, which has granitic sandy soils on a high southeast exposure, at 400 meters. The vines average 50 years in age. The fruit is harvested by hand. Vinification is based on carbonic maceration of whole clusters, with native yeasts. Soft pump-overs are carried out twice during fermentation. The wine is aged over the winter in stainless steel tanks.
There is so much to love about this wine. The nose shows more on the savory side, with herbal notes accompanying the red and dark berry and plum notes. On the palate, the wine glides, with moderate tannins and acidity, and its fruit and earthy elements well in balance. A delicious Beaujolais-Villages that any fan of Gamay will love.
