Einaudi "Monvigliero" Barolo DOCG '18

Poderi Luigi Einaudi was founded in 1897 by the 23-year-old Luigi Einaudi, in San Giacomo, Dogliani (he later became the Republic of Italy’s first president, elected in 1948). His farm included a few rows of Dolcetto and Nebbiolo vines, and he eventually acquired more prestigious sites. He stopped selling fruit to the local co-op and began making his own wine. Today the estate is run by his great-grandson Matteo Sardagna and the winemaker Giuseppe Caviola. 
 
The Monvigliero vineyard became part of the Poderi in 2017. It is one of the most northerly plots of the denomination and considered to be among the most prized lands of Verduno. The Monvigliero Barolo bottling is the most recent addition to Einaudi’s Barolo line, with 2018 marking the inaugural vintage. The wine was released in 2022, the year of the winery’s 125th anniversary.


The 2018 Monvigliero Barolo is made solely from Nebbiolo, grown on soils rich in limestone and chalk, at 220 to 310 meters in elevation, and with southeastern and southwestern exposure. The vineyard area is about 1.5 hectares, with planting dating back to 1969. The wine is vinified in concrete, with temperature-controlled fermentation, postfermentation maceration, and racking after 22 to 25 days. Maturation is carried out in French oak barrels for 24 to 36 months, and the wine is further refined in bottle.
