Domaine Lupin Frangy Roussette de Savoie '23

Bruno Lupin sits a little outside the range of traditional Savoie winemaking. This is the case geographically - he's rather isolated in his corner of the Les Usses River Valley - and equally true in his winemaking, where he favors the local grape Altesse (or Roussette), which accounts for only around 10% of total plantings in Savoie.

Lupin, in fact, is considered one of the masters of this varietal. In his vineyards on a southerly hillside in the village Frangy, protected from the bite of bitter Northern Winds. In this environment, Lupin is able to coax out a rather rich, age-worthy wine showcasing white peaches and orange blossom flowers, a slick, stony minerality, and the zip of white pepper. Producers of Roussette de Savoie will often leave some residual sugar to tame a fearsome acidity, but between the extra ripeness Lupin finds in his vineyard, an allowance of a percent of the wine to go through malolactic conversion, and a dedication to producing bottles intended for aging, Lupin ferments his completely dry.
