Domaine La Madura Saint-Chinian "Canopé" Saint-Chinian Rouge '18
Domaine La Madura is a winery that is near and dear to my heart. I’ve been a champion of these wines for almost as long as this store has been in business.
The story, the wines, are all emblematic of the type of French wines I love. Cyril and Nadia Bourgne are true vigneron, people that are ingrained in their appellation, vineyards and local community. The vision has always been clear, to produce Rhône varietal wines that are true representations of Saint-Chinian, but do so in a way with that shows that even full-bodied wines can have balance.
The wines keep getting better at La Madura, and this is highlighted by the 2018 “Canopé” Rouge. A blend of 45% Syrah, 36% Mourvèdre, 12% Grenache, and 7% Carignan. This is the best vintage of this wine that I’ve had. The nose is intensely rich and brooding with hints at blackberry, violets and pepper notes. The mouthfeel is rich, but silky, with the tannins fully incorporated into the fruit. While the palate is rich, it still feels well balanced. In years past I’ve always recommend cellaring this wine, but the 2018 Canopé is delicious now!
