    Dei Rosso di Montepulciano '22

The Dei estate was established in 1964 by Alibrando Dei, though during the early years the grapes were sold. The family started making wine in the 1980s, renting a cellar in the town of Montepulciano, then building a cellar next to the villa in 1989. Dei’s granddaughter Caterina has managed the estate since 1991. The vineyards include about 60 hectares of vines, divided between the zones of Martiena, Bossona, La Ciarliana, and La Piaggia, on the slopes of the hill of Montepulciano. Sangiovese and Canaiolo are the main varieties grown, and a small percentage of international varieties are grown as well. (The Montepulicano in the name of this wine refers to the region, not to be confused with the grape named Montepulicano, known for its use in the wines of Abruzzo.)

The 2022 Dei Rosso di Montepulciano is a blend of 90% Sangiovese (Prugnolo Gentile), 5% Canaiolo Nero, and 5% Merlot. The wine was fermented with indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled stainless steel, then aged for three months in 33-50 hectoliter Slavonian oak casks and cellared in the bottle for six months before release.

This is quintessential Sangiovese from Montepulciano, with notes of dark cherries, leather, and spice on the nose. Good richness on the palate, with more red fruit flavors, savory herbs, and a well-balanced interplay between tannins and acidity. A great everyday Sangiovese. Such an easy wine to pair with any kind of pizza or tomato-based dishes, stews, or grilled meats.
