Coto de Gomariz Ribeiro Blanco '24

The D.O. Ribeiro has often flown relatively under the radar, despite its status as the first recognized D.O. in Galicia, established in 1932 as part of the first wave established by Spain's Wine Statute that same year. Perhaps it's the name's proximity to other, more famous D.O.s (Ribera del Duero, Ribeira Sacra), perhaps it's the sudden superstar status of its younger Galician sibling Rías Baixas (estb. 1988). Whatever reason, it's certainly not because of the wine - they're often stunning representations of local varietals like Treixadura or Loureira on the white side, or Sousón for the reds (in addition to the much more well known Albariño and Mencía).

Coto de Gomariz, founded in 1978, was born from the idea of helping re-establish Ribeiro as an internationally acclaimed wine region showcasing these local varietals. The Ribeiro Blanco is their old vine blend of these local white varietals - Treixadura, with it's plush, fleshy texture and citric, floral, herb-tinged tones, takes center stage as 70% of the blend, filled in with Godello, Albariño, and Loureira. It's fresh and elegant - mineral and crisp, but with a savoury, cerebral edge marked by spices and shaved ginger. It's a beautiful match with rich seafood dishes like paella or fideuà, or a myriad of Tapas dishes, or simply with the atmosphere of a late summer evening after the heat of the day begins to break.
