Clos du Caillou "Bouquet des Garrigues" Côtes du Rhône Rouge '21

Clos du Caillou "Bouquet des Garrigues" Côtes du Rhône Rouge '21

Clos du Caillou’s history is woven into that of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Originally founded in 1895, and though built with a cellar on site, Clos du Caillou’s original focus was as a hunting preserve, which led to its exclusion from the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation when it was created in the 1930s. When the government experts arrived at the clos in 1936 to survey the land for the appellation, they were greeted by armed caretakers, not exactly a warm welcome. This is the reason a blank spot in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape map persists. It wasn’t until 1955, under the Pouizin family, that the potential of the land was taken seriously. Forests were cleared to make way for more vineyards, and estate bottling began by the 1970s. The winery has since progressed further, becoming certified organic in 2010, though all work has been organic since the 2000 vintage. More recently, biodynamic practices have been incorporated. Clos du Caillou presents bottles full of spectacular terroir, the very same that makes Châteauneuf-du-Pape so distinctive and special. While most of the wines are classified simply as Côtes-du-Rhône, all show complexity and depth.

The 2021 Côtes du Rhône Rouge is a blend of 70% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 5% Mourvèdre, 5% Carignan, and 5% Counoise, from the lieu-dit Les Garrigues, on the border of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The vines grow on soils of clay with round pebbles. The grapes are harvested by hand, with sorting in the vineyard and then in the cellar. The fruit is 80% destemmed, then fermented in concrete vats with indigenous yeasts, with 20% carbonic maceration. Pump-over, manual punch-down, and délestages are carried out throughout the maceration period (27 days). The wine is aged for 24 months, with 60% in concrete tanks and 40% in foudres.

Both red and dark berry fruit notes on the nose, cracked pepper, and violets. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, with rich fruit notes that never feel candied. A long finish with just a hint of tannic structure. Try this alongside beef Wellington.
