Clos Cibonne "Cuvée Spéciale des Vignettes" Côtes de Provence Rosé '21
Clos Cibonne is arguably the most original and spectacular producer of rosé in Provence. The estate, comprising 15 hectares of vineyards, sits only 800 meters from the coast, and is surrounded by hillsides, creating its own microclimate. It is 1 of 18 Crus Classés of Côtes de Provence.
This was once the property of Jean-Baptiste de Cibon, a captain in the royal marines under Louis XVI. It has been in the hands of the Roux family since 1793. In 1930 André Roux, in an effort to make high quality wine, planted the vineyards to the rare Tibouren grape variety. The granddaughter of André, Brigitte and her husband Claude Deforges took over the property in 1993, breathing new life, and dedication to top quality wines.
Clos Cibonne’s iconic “Cuvée Spéciale des Vignettes” stands apart from other rosés as a classic, unique bottling featuring the Tibouren grape in the lead role. Legendary among experienced French wine collectors for its texture, substance, and ability to age gracefully for a decade or more, “Cuvée Spéciale des Vignettes” is aged under fleurette (a thin veil of yeast, similar to that used in the process of making sherry or some Jura wines) in 120-year-old, 5,000-liter foudres for one year. Clos Cibonne crafts a wine that is singular by combining a rare grape with a unique aging process.
I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that the grapes for this wine, which are organically farmed Tibouren grapes, come from the estate’s oldest vines, over 60 years old.
The 2021 is a spectacular vintage for Clos Cibonne. Less crop, but incredible quality.
