Penedès
Wine has been made at the Can Feixes estate since the late seventeenth century, though it wasn’t officially founded until the mid eighteenth century, by Don Jaime Feixes. It was acquired by the Huguet family in 1945. The estate is located on gravelly slopes at the northern border of the upper Penedès wine region of Barcelona, and the vineyards benefit from an ideal combination of Mediterranean climate, diverse soil types, and careful cultivation techniques. The Huguet family considers respect and protection of the environment integral to making high-quality wines, and the wines are certified organic.
These are the farthest Penedès vineyards from the Mediterranean, with extreme continental temperature variation, and the drier climate is conducive to ripening healthy grapes. The soil contains chalk and clay, and it is quite rocky, with a capacity to retain water. The combination of climate and soil result in lower yields and grapes of exceptional quality.
The Negre is a young dry red wine, made from a selection of 70% Tempranillo and 30% Merlot, from vines grown on soils of limestone with gravel. The grapes were manually harvested and fully destemmed, then macerated and fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. The wine was aged for eight months in tank, in contact with the lees, and then further matured in bottle for a minimum of six months.
A Spanish red for Bordeaux fans.
