Inspired by a pilgrimage to the south of France near Durban-Corbières alongside Kermit Lynch and Bruce Neyers to spend time with vigneron Maxime Magnon, the 2022 Camino Cellars “Higgledy Piggledy” Carignan–Mourvèdre reflects Tadeo Borchardt’s long-standing admiration for old-vine Carignan and the wines of southern France. The Carignan comes from the Kettleman Vineyard in Lodi, planted in the 1950s on sandy soils, while the 10% Mourvèdre is sourced from the historic Evangelho Vineyard in Contra Costa, planted in 1890, also in sandy soils. The wine is fermented entirely whole cluster with native yeasts, then aged in neutral French and Austrian oak before being bottled unfined and unfiltered. At just 13% alcohol, it is sun-kissed, juicy, and bright, yet driven by balance and restraint, with lifted aromatics and a graceful, energetic palate—clearly referencing the southern French wines that inspired it. Only 100 cases were produced.
