    Beurer Riesling Trocken '24

Jochen Beurer is one of the most distinctive winegrowers in Württemberg, working in Kernen-Stetten in the Rems Valley, just east of Stuttgart. Before becoming one of Germany’s most respected biodynamic producers, Beurer was a serious BMX racer, and there is still something of that independent, kinetic spirit in his wines. This is not polished, anonymous German Riesling, but a wine shaped by living soils, spontaneous fermentation, and the sandstone and marl slopes of this often-overlooked region.

The estate has been certified organic for many years and biodynamic since 2008, with a philosophy centered on careful work in the vineyard and minimal intervention in the cellar. Beurer’s approach is often described as “controlled non-intervention”: healthy fruit, natural yeasts, and patient, thoughtful winemaking rather than unnecessary manipulation.

The 2024 Riesling Trocken is Beurer’s dry estate Riesling, fermented spontaneously with native yeasts and aged in stainless steel. It captures the bright, energetic side of the grape, with notes of lime, green apple, citrus blossom, pear, and wet stone. The wine is dry, but not austere, with a lovely combination of snap, texture, and savory mineral detail.

This is a terrific aperitif, but it is even better at the table with sushi, pork schnitzel, or your favorite Thai BYOB.
