Morgan Twain-Peterson and Chris Cottrell are the duo behind the Bedrock Heritage wines. Their mission is simple: preserve and rehabilitate old historical vineyards throughout Northern California.
Sourced from vines averaging 60 years old, the 2022 “Ode to Lulu” rosé is a blend 60% Mourvèdre, 35% Grenache, and 5% Syrah. “Ode to Lulu” is Bedrock’s homage to the rosés of Bandol, in the southern French region of Provence, and particularly to Lulu Peynaud, of the great Bandol estate Domaine Tempier. Bedrock’s intention for “Ode to Lulu” is a refreshing, versatile wine that also offers delicious fruit character. The Mourvèdre is sourced from the sandy soils and own-rooted vines of Oakley, with a bit of fruit that was planted in the 1920s at Pagani Ranch. The Grenache was planted in the 1880s at Gibson Ranch, in the McDowell Valley, in Mendocino.
This is a gorgeous rosé, showing both tart and ripe fruit flavors, from ruby red grapefruit and blood orange to watermelon and peach, with light floral notes or rose and peony. The palate shows a youthful energy, vibrant with notes of white tea and salinity. “Ode to Lulu” is intense and layered yet refreshing with every sip. It’s a great wine for soft cheeses and cured meats, though it’s perhaps an even better match for grilled tuna, ratatouille, or a Caesar salad with garlic and anchovies aplenty.
