Xurxo Alba’s family has been farming and making Albariño in the O Salnés subregion of Rías Baixas for generations, though only since 2006 has the family been bottling and selling its own wines. Alba’s cellar, in the seaside town of Cambados, is next to his parents’ restaurant and small shop. They own about 2.5 hectares and source from about 10 hectares total, spread throughout the region.
Alba farms as naturally as possible, and works with other farmers who do as well, given the challenges of the climate. He vinifies his wines with spontaneous fermentations with native yeasts and adapts his practices according to the vintage.
This 100% Albariño bottling is made from grapes manually harvested from various organically farmed parcels. Each parcel is fermented separately. Whole clusters are direct pressed, and fermentation is carried out with native yeast partially in stainless steel and neutral oak, without malolactic conversion, helping preserve the freshness and acidity of the wine. The wine is aged for about six months in stainless steel sur lie.
A wine you could smell all day. Beautiful notes of candied grapefruit peel, sea spray, and quinine. Bright and vibrant on the palate, with more citrus notes, a hint of stone fruit, and a fresh, crisp finish. Break out the shellfish and be transported to the seaside.
