Weingut Bründlmayer is in Langenlois, some 70 kilometers northwest of Vienna, upstream along the Danube in the Lower Austrian Kamp Valley. The wooded hills of the Waldviertel protect the vineyards from the cold northwesterly winds. During the day, the sun warms the stony terraces, while at night the forest air drifts through the Kamp Valley into the Langenloiser Arena. Willi Bründlmayer farms 90 hectares of various grape varieties in grand cru vineyards around the village of Langenlois, and Andreas Wickhoff MW has worked alongside him since 2016. This area, in the heart of the Kamptal, is home to some of the most geologically diverse terroirs in Europe. Each of these rocky, terraced vineyards creates its own microclimate.
Willi has converted some of his vineyards (17 hectares in total) to the Lyre training system, which he helped develop. Vines are trained low to the ground, to benefit from the warmth of the primary rock soils, then the canes are trained at an angle upward and perpendicular to the row, which doubles the sunlit and aired foliage surface and improves grape ripeness. The well-aired leaves also dry faster, thus reducing the risk of dreaded grape mildew. As of 2019, Bründlmayer is certified organic by LACON, an outside, objective, certifying body.
“L & T” is always the lightest Grüner Veltliner of the vintage. The grapes are sourced from elevated, slightly cooler terraces with light, stony soils. The wine is fermented in stainless steel tanks, at a cool temperature, producing some effervescence in the wine that vanishes again in the course of maturation. On the nose, you can expect apples, fresh citrus, and mild floral notes, as well as green herbal notes. It’s fresh and crisp on the palate, with a hint of spice on the finish. Enjoy this wine as an aperitif and with fresh cheeses, or with fish, chicken, and sautéed vegetable dishes.
