Alto Adige
Weingut Abraham is a small estate that was founded in 2011 by Martin and Marlies Abraham, near the town of Eppan, one of Alto Adige’s top winegrowing areas, in lower Südtirol (South Tyrol). They are champions of techniques historic to the region, including pergola vine training, and practice sustainable viticulture. Vom Muschelkalk is the estate’s highest-elevation vineyard, at 600 meters, with 60-year-old pergola-trained vines. It is located on a hillside at the foot of the Mendel Mountains, and the soils are a mix, with shell limestone fragments called Muschelkalk, from which the vineyard takes its name.
The wine was fermented with wild yeasts in neutral 500-liter oak barrels and aged for nine months in cask on the lees, then aged for six months in stainless steel before bottling. “Vom Muschelkalk” shows the graceful side of Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc), dry and refreshingly crisp on the palate, with aromas of almond, lemon zest, pear, chamomile, a hint of fennel, and a seashell minerality. Pair it with smoked trout pâté, crab linguine, scallops, or roasted chicken with tarragon and cremini mushrooms.
