Viña Sastre Ribera del Duero "Roble" '19

Viña Sastre Ribera del Duero "Roble" '19

Viña Sastre is the benchmark, family-run estate in the town of La Horra, the heart of Ribera del Duero, boasting some of the oldest vineyards in the region. Jesus Sastre is the farmer and winemaker, producing some of Spain’s most compelling, honest, and collectible wines. He is committed to organic farming and biodynamic principles, with the wines made naturally and bottled without fining or filtration.

Like so many wines, it all starts with the soil. Here, Sastre’s vines struggle to thrive in the nutrient poor chalk-filled clay. The bright white soil is a stark contrast to the dusty ochre or rudy brick hue found elsewhere. The light color is key to making Sastre’s wines exceptional, reflecting light during the day, bathing the vines in the sun’s rays, while cooling off quickly at night. The drop in temperature between day and night allows the vines to shut down almost immediately when the sun sets, preserving acidity in the grapes.

Sastre’s “Roble” is an exceptional value and entry into the producer’s hand-crafted, world-class range of wines. It’s made from organically farmed Tempranillo grapes from estate vineyards in La Horra, La Aguilera, and Roa, from 800 to 840 meters in elevation. Following a manual harvest, the wine is fermented with native yeasts and undergoes a long maceration on the skins. It is cold stabilized naturally by moving the wine from the barrel room to separate tanks in a part of the winery whose temperature is naturally regulated by the outdoor winter temperatures. It’s then racked into one-, two-, and three-year-old French and American oak barrels and aged for eight months before bottling.

The 2019 “Roble” leads with notes of black fruit, followed by stewed raspberry, savory herbs, and even hints of coffee and leather. On the palate, the wine has a balance of fruit and earth, of tannin and richness. This full-bodied wine is great on its own but would be excellent paired with lamb chops or a Black and Blue burger.

This is easily the greatest vintage of "Roble" produced from Viña Sastre—don't miss it!
