The Montsant region of Spain is home to some of the best Rhône varietal wines in the country. Josep M. Vendrell Rived is one of the most knowledgeable people we know when it comes to the region. Having gotten his start at the Capçanes cooperative, he helped move the family from just farmers to producers.
His small family winery farms their grapes organically, and looks to make wines that highlight the two main grapes of the region: Garnatxa and Carinyena. A few years back Josep M. created a label of wine called "Miloca." Easily identified by its Owl drawing on the label, it did something that the winery had never done before, highlight a single grape varietal. In the region of Montsant it is more typical to find Garnatxa and Samsó (the Catalan word for Carinyena) blended together. Miloca was different, this was a young wine, produced from a single grape, showing off its freshness and providing the drinker an opportunity to learn more about the grape.
We are excited to introduce the latest release of the Miloca Garnatxa. As with all Vendrell Rived wines, the grapes come from around the village of Marça, are hand picked, brought to the small cellar, and sorted for the best selection. The Miloca Garnatxa is fermented in tank, and doesn't spend time in oak. Transparency of the varietal is paramount. This is an amazingly pure expression of Garnatxa. The aromatics show notes of wild strawberry, blackberry, mineral and cracked pepper. Bold yet bright on the palate, it offers great richness without being liqueur like. This way overdelivers for its price point. Pair this with braised short ribs or grilled lamb chops.
