    Vajra Dolcetto d'Alba '21

    Vajra Dolcetto d'Alba '21

The Vajras are one of the most notable yet quiet families making Barolo. With some 40 hectares under vine, the estate is an independent winery, entirely family owned. It is steeped in tradition and based just outside the village that gives its name to the appellation. Aldo Vajra took over the estate in 1968 and soon acquired the first organic certification of the region (1971), then created private biotype selections (selezioni massali) of Nebbiolo and Dolcetto.

While Nebbiolo and Barbera tend to receive the most attention when it comes to the grape varieties of Piedmont, Dolcetto, whose name means “little sweet one,” is another variety that beautifully expresses the region. Compared with a variety such as Barbera, Dolcetto has more-ample tannins and lower acidity, but both varieties share a quality of accessibility in their youth and are often consumed in Piedmont while waiting for the Nebbiolo wines to mature.

The Vajra Dolcetto d’Alba is aged in stainless steel to preserve the freshness and brightness of the variety. In the glass, the wine has a joyful character, offering aromas of ripe cherry, blueberry, violets, spices, and flowers, grounded by soft tannins and earthiness on the palate, with a bright, savory finish. Dolcetto is the everyday wine typically combined with Piedmontese antipasti, a great start to any meal, but it’s versatile enough to match with pizza or pastas with mushrooms or meat sauces, or a simply roasted chicken.
