Domaine Sérol is one of the leaders in quality in the humble Côte Roannaise appellation. Stéphane and Carine Sérol have identified some of the best terroir in these high altitude granitic vineyards. They practice biodynamic viticulture, something that they had to work towards since taking over the domaine in 2006.
Over two decades ago Stéphane’s father, co-purchased a vineyard with Pierre Troisgros, one of France’s most iconic chefs. La Maison Troisgros has long been one of the top three Michelin starred restaurants in France, which it still is today under the eye of Michele Troisgros and family.
Their “Les Blondins” vineyard is planted to Gamay St. Romain on a steep south-facing hill. The fruit from the hill is vinified in two parts, with the fruit from the bottom of the hill aged in cement tanks for 6 months. The fruit from the top of the hill, which contributes 70% toward the blend has a slower maceration/fermentation, before being aged in wooden vats.
The 2017 is just brilliant. A silky, elegant Gamay, without the fruity exuberance you might find from a young Beaujolais. This is distinctly Gamay in its texture, but with some of the spice, earth, and mineral notes that you’d expect to find from a wine of the Loire. A great value.
