Abruzzo
Almost 25 years ago, Riccardo Tiberio found a plot of some of the oldest Trebbiano Abruzzese vines that were so impressive he decided to purchase the plot and begin making wines. The vines were noteworthy not just for their age, however, but for their rarity—much of Abruzzo’s vineyard area is planted to other varieties that were until recently often confused with Trebbiano Abruzzese.
Over a decade ago, Antonio and Cristiana, son and daughter of Riccardo, took charge of Tiberio. Antonio leads the grape growing and viticulture, while Cristiana, a chemistry specialist who also teaches college sommelier and enology classes, handles the winemaking. Prior to taking over winemaking duties, she trained with producers including Jacques Selosse in Champagne, Nicolas Joly at Coulée de Serrant, Egon Müller in the Mosel, and various producers in Chablis. This dynamic team has established Tiberio, and Abruzzo, as one of the most important producers wine making in Abruzzo.
The grapes for the 2022 Trebbiano d’Abruzzo wine came from old vines with an average age of 65 years. The vines are grown on about 2.5 hectares of land, on limestone soils with gravel and sandy subsoils. The grapes were manually harvested in mid-September; free-run juice is fermented in stainless steel tanks using only indigenous yeasts, with no malolactic fermentation.
With so much industrial and boring Trebbiano produced, this example will change your mind about the variety.
