As Pinot Noir is one of the quintessential wines for the Thanksgiving table, we knew we had to include the “Copper Pot” Pinot Noir. This is one of the best value Pinot Noir we tasted this year.
A few months back, winemaker John Seccombe came to Chicago to introduce his delicious range of wines. The winery was started back in 2012, focusing on fruit from various old-vine parcels throughout the Western Cape of South Africa.
The family of John’s wife owns a hotel in the Drakensberg mountains of the Eastern Cape. They tasked John with creating a Pinot Noir for the inn, something that would be true to the varietal and work with the food. That is when the “Copper Pot” Pinot Noir was born. It incorporates fruit from two vineyards in Overberg, along with a vineyard each from Stellenbosch and Elgin.
John uses around 60% whole cluster fruit, and keeps the extraction to a minimum. The wine is aged in old French oak for around 9 months.
Pure red fruit, medium weight, finishing dry with a touch of spice and forest floor. A Pinot Noir that the whole family will enjoy.
