Tatomer "Hinter der Mauer" White Blend '19

Founded in 2008, Graham Tatomer’s eponymous winery is an ode to California Riesling and Grüner Veltliner. An early job as a teenager at Santa Barbara Winery introduced Graham to the Lafond Winery and vineyards which is home to the oldest Riesling plantings in the region from 1973. This early obsession lead Graham to seek an internship at Weingut Knoll in the Wachau region of Austria, simply one of the great wine estates anywhere in the world! Graham worked with the Knoll family and became close with Emmerich Knoll who is currently shepherding this historic family estate.

This mentorship clearly defined the Tatomer style. The wines are beautifully precise and detailed, yet retain a remarkable drive and power—yet it should be said this is not simply a carbon copy of Austrian wine—Graham clearly honors Santa Barbara terroir and the wines have a unique charm and idiosyncratic quality that could only come from someone who was born and raised in the region.

“Hinter der Mauer” is an Austrian-German term that Graham Tatomer learned while working harvest at Knoll which roughly translates to “your back against the wall”. The area between the walls of the terraces of the vineyard and the vines he would work on was very tight and this feeling of having your back against the wall is something very familiar during the COVID-19 pandemic. This row is often extra narrow and exceedingly difficult to work, yet also yields some of the best fruit due to the radiant heat from the wall itself.

The 2019 is a blend of 70% Grüner and 30% Riesling from a diverse cast of cool climate sites across the Central Coast he sources from including John Sebastiano (Sta. Rita Hills AVA), Kick-On Ranch (Santa Barbara AVA) and La Estancia Vineyard (Santa Lucia Highlands AVA). The wine is whole cluster pressed, giving an additional aromatic dimension then aged in stainless steel before being bottled unfined and unfiltered. Extremely crisp and dry with white pepper and sweet pea tendril on the nose, the palate is taut with a Casaba Melon savoriness and a long and structured finish.

Due to the dramatic loss of restaurant sales during the pandemic, Graham created this wine which he values at over double the price. Get it while you can!
