After years spent learning the area and working with Sangiovese, he purchased the Pian di Conte estate in 1980, laying the foundation for one of the region’s quietly reliable family domaines. Today the estate is run by Pierluigi’s grandson, Riccardo Talenti, who took over the property after Pierluigi’s death in 1999. Riccardo also serves as the estate’s winemaker, working alongside consulting enologist Carlo Ferrini.

Talenti’s vineyards are not arranged as one single block, but divided among 11 individual parcels, each with its own altitude, exposure, and soil profile. Across the estate, the vines grow in a mix of clay, sand, silt, sandstone, tuff, and the fractured marl known locally as galestro. Some of the Sangiovese planted here comes from selections made by Pierluigi himself during his decades of work in Montalcino, giving the wines a direct connection to the founder’s original vision. In recent years, this diversity of sites has become even more important, with individual parcels harvested and vinified with increasing precision.

The 2024 Rosso di Montalcino is made from 100% Sangiovese, sourced from vineyards on the southeast and southwest sides of Montalcino at 250 to 400 meters of elevation. The southeast-facing parcels are rooted in sandy loam soils, with limestone plates and plenty of heavy stones, bringing freshness, structure, and a clear mineral line to the wine. After fermentation, the wine ages for several months in French and Slavonian oak barrels, followed by additional time in bottle before release.

Rosso di Montalcino is often described as the “younger sibling” of Brunello, but in the best hands it is one of Tuscany’s most satisfying wines in its own right. Talenti’s 2024 captures that balance beautifully: deep ruby in color, with vivid notes of cherry, plum, and sour cherry, followed by a palate that is smooth, mineral, and structured without feeling heavy. We would recommend giving this a half hour in a decanter before drinking. This has the freshness to go with a Margherita pizza, but also enough depth for a grilled porterhouse steak.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1835/0685/files/rn-image_picker_lib_temp_c9f4e8e0-099a-492c-ac2a-da1c61bc6977.jpg?v=1787004906
