The Mayor of the Marche is back! Alberto Taddei of Selvagrossa has become our version of a wine mascot. He and his brother Alessandro run a small family operation located on the outskirts of the village of Pesaro. Alberto has worked throughout Italy and even in New York as a sommelier. He returned home to the family business, and the wines have continued to get better year in and year out. In fact, the wines being produced at Selvagrossa today are among the very best of the region.
If there were a flagship wine from Selvagrossa, that wine would be “Trimpilin.” The wine is made predominantly Sangiovese from vines planted by Alberto and Alessandro's grandfather. More than 50 years in age, the vines are deeply rooted, yielding grapes of great concentration and complexity. In the glass, the 2018 “Trimpilin” shows lovely aromas of tart cherry and raspberry, and a hint of tomato leaf. The palate echoes the nose with flavors of elegant red fruits as well as mouthwatering acidity, moderate tannins, and a long, layered finish. In the Marche, 2018 was a hot, dry vintage, and this bottling of “Trimpilin” reflects that. The wine is a bit richer than recent vintages, and it deserves an equally delicious pairing—think Pizza alla Salsiccia or Italian subs loaded with salumi and tangy provolone.
