Schlossgut Diel "Diel de Diel" White '19

The Schlossgut Diel winery was purchased by the Diel family in 1802 and is today owned by Armin Diel, whose daughter Caroline oversees the winemaking. Diel’s wines are a fascinating window into terroir and the differences achieved at various levels of ripeness. Diel is one of a few producers still vinifying each Grosses Gewächs site at each Prädikat level. Located in the lower Nahe region, on a steep south-facing slope, Diel’s holdings are in the Goldloch, Burgberg and Pittermännchen vineyards, documented as early as 1901 as producing wines of exceptional quality, with clay soils that include slate and gravel. This is a winery that, like the best, is focused on great vineyard sites, sustainable vineyard work, and careful winemaking.

“Diel de Diel” is an excellent introduction to the wines of Schlossgut Diel. Made in the spirit of a field blend, and drawing from the estate’s range of terroirs, it is a blend of estate fruit—Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, and small amount of Riesling for freshness—fermented in stainless steel and aged in large used barrel, with extended lees contact, imparting a round texture and a sense of weight on the palate. The wine shows notes of pineapple, white stone fruit, ginger, and almond, and the palate is fresh and vibrant, with a rocky minerality.
