Mario Schiopetto started this iconic Friuli winery in 1965 and eventually took over the property from the Catholic church in 1989. He revived the mostly clay and limestone vineyards, as he knew there was great potential in their fruit, and he worked with his children to build one of the region’s top wineries.
Schiopetto, while known mostly for its white wines, also makes a few outstanding reds, and today we’re featuring what many consider to be its finest. Named after the specific vineyard site, “Podere dei Blumeri” is a 50/50 blend of Merlot and Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, which spends 14 months in oak barrels and then ages for a minimum of 18 months in bottle before release.
In the glass it shows aromas of plum, cedar, cherry, and tobacco. On the palate it’s both elegant and intense, with flavors of plush red fruit, pleasant acidity, and dusty tannins, with a long, persistent finish. A great bottle for the chillier days ahead, pair it alongside grilled sausages and creamy polenta with mushrooms and herbs.
