Rupert & Rothschild "Baroness Nadine" Chardonnay '17

Rupert & Rothschild "Baroness Nadine" Chardonnay '17

Chardonnay is likely the most misunderstood grape varietal in the world. It is also one of its best. Still to this day, I have people tell me that they don’t like Chardonnay, and then turn around to describe White Burgundy as their favorite white wine. What they may not know is that White Burgundy is Chardonnay! It is just grown in a very different climate with very different soil than, let’s say, a Napa Chardonnay. Given that Chardonnay is one of the great varietals of the world, we have seen it planted in just about every country that produces wine. The diversity of Chardonnay is seemingly endless. We are excited to introduce you to a special Chardonnay from one of South Africa’s most important wineries. Rupert & Rothschild was founded by the late Anton Rupert and late Baron Edmond de Rothschild. Their magnificent winery is located in a historic farm that dates back to the 17th century, between the Paarl and Franschhoek regions. While Bordeaux varietals are the focus of this winery, their one white is produced from Chardonnay. “Baroness Nadine” is named after the widow of Baron Edmond, and is modeled after the great whites of Burgundy. Baroness Nadine Chardonnay is whole cluster pressed, with only the free-run juice used for the wine. Fermentation takes place in a various vessels including concrete, stainless steel and 300 liter French oak. Aging is done in those same sized 300 liter oak barrels for 10 months, with only one-third new and the rest used. The nose is beautiful, with notes of nectarine, lemon curd, and almond. Crisp up front, then showing medium weight on the palate, finished with notes of toasted macadamia nuts and stone fruit. Enjoy these with seared sea scallops or even on your next fried chicken night. Take advantage of special pricing on this wine, normally $35+ per bottle.
