Champagne
The Coutier family has been in the grand cru village of Ambonnay since 1619, and the fifth-generation vigneron Antoine Coutier currently is in charge. Coutier has nine hectares of vineyards, with about one-third planted to Chardonnay and two-thirds to Pinot Noir. In 1948, Antoine Coutier’s grandfather became the first vigneron in Ambonnay to plant Chardonnay in the village. The estate’s vineyards consist of 40 different plots located exclusively in Ambonnay, with an average vine age of 38 years. The Coutiers began farming organically in 2019. Coutier's wines are characterized by richness and freshness.
In the spring of 2020, the family released their first single-vineyard wine, La Pierre aux Larrons. In 1948, Henri Coutier was one of the first to plant Chardonnay in Ambonnay, a grand cru Champagne village normally devoted to Pinot Noir. He planted this variety in a single vineyard plot called Pierre aux Larrons, and this plot has become the source of all massal selection Chardonnay cuttings that the winery uses. In 2015, his grandson Antoine returned to the estate to vinify his first vintage, and the decision was made to make the first single vineyard Chardonnay bottling for the estate. The wine is aged for one year in barrels before bottling; riddled by hand. No dosage.
