Spoiler alert - 2016 Romeu Tinto Reserva has arrived, and it is one of the best wines in my store! Quinta do Romeu, while technically in the Douro Valley, is located in the northern most part of the Upper Douro. In fact the Menéres family considers this area the “warm lands of Trás-os-Montes.” Their vineyards enjoy a much cooler micro-climate than the heart of the Douro, and the two rivers that flow near Jerusalém do Romeu have cut up the valley into different expositions, with very diverse soils and micro-climates. The reds of Quinta do Romeu avoid the overt alcohol and heaviness that many producers achieve from some of the warmer sections of the Douro Valley. That doesn't mean there is a lack of flavor or richness from the reds. Take this excellent Reserva red, a blend of 80% Touriga Nacional, 10% Touriga Franca and 10% Sousão. All farmed organically in the Romeu vineyards, the grapes were handpicked, manually selected on a sorting table, before being destemmed and crushed. The juice undergoes fermentation with native yeast in an open top lager (granite tank). The wine is aged in a combination of light toasted Austrian oak barrels and used barriques for 1 year. Aromas of violets, blackberries, raspberries and spice. Medium weight, with a good core of fruit in the mid-palate, without being jammy. Soft but balanced tannins along with fresh acidity and great length. This is truly an incredible value.
