One of Portugal’s most important quality producers, Bágeiras is located in the Bairrada region, an Atlantic-influenced region, just 15 kilometers from the coast. While Bágeiras is a longtime grower in the region, it wasn’t until 1989 that Mário Sérgio Alves Nuno decided to create estate-bottled wines rather than continue selling the grapes of vineyards belonging to his grandparents. All the grapes are handpicked, and the sparkling wines have no residual sugar. He firmly believes that quality means nothing without identity. So while Quinta das Bágeiras isn’t the oldest winery in Bairrada, it is traditional, and the wines speak to the region and to the identity of the vineyards and the people who produce it.
At Bágeiras, almost 60% of production is sparkling wine, and this is one of the world’s best sparkling wine values. A blend of Maria Gomes, Bical, and Baga, all of which is estate fruit, it is produced in the Champagne method (second fermentation in bottle) and aged on its lees for a year. It is a bruto natural, so no secondary dosage was added.
Pretty nose combining notes of pear and apple skin with citrus and mineral notes. It is fresh and vibrant, while at the same type showing of the classic Bairrada mineral quality of the region’s sparkling and white wines. This is fantastic with freshly shucked raw oysters, simple salads, or grilled sausage.
